Blues to Beatles Guitar Camp

Learn guitar with master educator and author Joe Sweet. Joe is the current Music Chairman of Lane Tech College Prep High School in Chicago and artist in residence teacher at Vandercook College of Music in Chicago.

This class will focus on popular styles of modern guitar music. The class will use techniques found in Mr. Sweet’s book Introduction to Guitar for Ensemble. The book is included in the registration fee. Students will learn the basics of popular guitar playing.

Students will have an opportunity to play out together on Friday for friends and family. Students must bring their own acoustic guitar to camp.

Students will learn the basics of popular guitar playing, including:
Learning to play chords in open position as well as playing chord charts with a group.
Learning to sight read rhythmic exercises.
Learning to play a 12 bar blues progression and improvise a guitar solo over the classes’ blues shuffle.

The class will learn songs as well, focusing largely on studying rock, pop and blues styles.

Meet Joe Sweet

Joe Sweet currently chairs the Music Department at Lane Tech College Preparatory in Chicago, where he has developed a guitar program that has grown to over 300 guitar students in eight classes. With a BMEd from Berklee College of Music in Boston and a master’s degree in education from Northern Arizona University, Sweet has taught music in public schools for over 20 years. In addition to guitar classes, he has also taught AP music theory, jazz band, and beginning orchestra classes. In 2010, Sweet published Introduction to Guitar for Ensemble, now used in schools throughout the U.S. and Canada, has been well received by music teachers, especially those whose principal instrument is something other than guitar.
